SUNDAY SCHOOL FORMAT 2010-11
1st-5th Graders
can look forward to a new Sunday School format at Faith. We are using
a Rotation-style Sunday school, which means we will focus more on learning
single stories
in a number of engaging and interesting ways: cooking, art, games, puppetry,
and more. Kids can cook a flatbread to learn about Passover meals, conduct
science experiments
with sheep’s wool and swaddling clothes to learn about shepherds
and first-century childcare, and perform puppet shows to recount the stories
they’re learning.
MORE
ABOUT THE STORIES
WHAT WE NEED AND HOW YOU CAN HELP
Rotation Sunday School is a great opportunity for our children to be engaged
in Sunday School—but what about you? The good news is that it is
easier than ever to volunteer in Sunday School. There are nearly twice
as many volunteer opportunities. This means that
we need a LOT more help, but also that you get to help by doing something
that very
closely matcheswhat you enjoy doing.
WE’LL NEED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP IN MANY WAYS:
Class Guides/Shepherds: Guides children around from
class to class. Requires NO
weekly lesson preparation! Weekly commitment; can be shared with another
volunteer.
Workshop Teacher: Teaches workshops including art, science,
performing arts,
cooking, games, and more. You prepare one lesson which you teach throughout
the entire workshop. A 4-6 week commitment.
Volunteer Assistant: You can assist the Children’s
Minister (Justin) in making sure volunteers are comfortable with their
lessons, and that everything went well.
A once-monthly commitment, speaking with fellow volunteers on the phone.
Classroom Technologist: Assists teachers with the operation
of classroom technology such as video cameras, overheads, televisions,
etc.

THE
CLASSES
There are many different sorts of workshops that we will utilize depending
on the story and the support of our community. The standards include:
Art:
Draws on the artistic heritage of the Christian faith, as well as the
wide variations of technique
and medium in the art world to get our hands messy with the Bible stories
Games: Review the Bible story with game show-inspired
activities
Performing Arts: Uses a variety of dramatic techniques,
including improvisation and puppetry, to bring the children
directly into the world of the Bible
Science: Answers technical and cultural questions of
life in
Biblical times, while using modern scientific experiments to teach new
dimensions to faith
Cooking: Hands-on experience with baking and cooking
allows kids to play with their food and their Bible stories
We
can develop workshops based around any interest,
so long as we have the people with interest and the gifts to teach it.
Missions, quilting, woodworking, fishing, music and movement—nothing
is off-bounds.
WHAT
ABOUT MY PRESCHOOLER OR KINDERGARTNER?
Next year’s Preschool and Kindergarten classes will resemble this
year’s, focusing on small-group classroom teaching. A brand-new
program is in development for our preschool children for the following
year.
Program details are being kept under wraps, but you can look forward
to an equally-exciting opportunity for your little ones.
